The Holy Bible Containing the Old and New Testaments... -- The Psalms of David in Metre.
Description
2 vols. Double gilt-paneled boards with turnip tools with buds and a central daisy tool, surrounded by a border of half-circles and corner fleurons. Spines with four raised bands with central alternating gilt saltires or floral design. All edges gilt. Marbled endpapers.
Condition
Corners slightly bumped, covers slightly bowed. Old ownership inscription effaced in first volume 19th century ink signature; a few pencil notes on endpapers. A fine example of a Scottish Herringbone design, one of two distinctive national styles of Scottish bookbinding in the 18th century. Both styles (the Herringbone and the Scottish Wheel) are found primarily on Bibles.
