Description

The Book of Common Prayer with title page and calendar printed in red and black. The Genealogies by J[ohn] S[peed] with title page and double-page map of Canaan bound at the front. General title page (1620) engraved within woodcut border comprising twenty-four compartments showing the tents of the twelve tribes as well as the figures of the twelve apostles. Text in two column black letter. Apocrypha included as issued. New Testament title page (1621). Concludes with colophon (1621) and tailpiece. Bound with Two Right Profitable Concordances with title page (1619). Bound with The Whole Booke of Psalmes with printed title page (1619) and printer’s device. Various woodcut first chapter initials and head- and tailpieces.

Binding

Rebacked black calf, retaining contemporary boards. Covers with elaborate and intricate blind drawer-handle tools featuring spirals, flowers, and fleurons around a central lozenge. Spine with five blind-lined bands in matching black calf. Endpapers renewed.    

Condition

Final leaf of BCP torn without loss; two ff. with marginal loss; Bbb4, Gg8 fraye dtoe dges; Psalter lacks final leaf of prayers.

Provenance

“Cole Matlock” and “Will Sanecobar (?)” to title page of Psalter. Prayer to verso of NT title reads:

I lay me down hoping to Lorde God know of whom I shall win of my sole O Lord defend and hope from me turn not then O God.

This day I have committed sinne a hundred times and more
I was conceived and borne there in forgive me Lord therefore…
