An illustrated quarto Geneva Bible with the misprint of Judas for Jesus. A complete and rebound copy with the contemporary covers laid down.
Description
The general title page (1608) engraved within woodcut border comprising twenty-four compartments showing the tents of the twelve tribes as well as the figures of the twelve apostles. Title is enclosed within a heart-shaped frame. Text in two column Roman font. Printed title page to the second part before Psalms. With Apocrypha as issued. Complete set of woodcut illustrations and maps. New Testament title page (1608) like the general title. This copy contains a misprint at John 6:67 where it reads “Judas” instead of “Jesus.” Ends on dated colophon (1608). Bound with a complete copy of The Whole Booke of Psalmes by Sternhold and Hopkins (1608) with printer’s device. Woodcut first chapter initials, colophons, and decorative head and tailpieces throughout.

Binding
Modern rebind in brown calf with contemporary covers laid down. Boards with a faded stamp that resembles the Royal crest. Remnants of clasps and hasps. Spine with five raised bands. No endpapers.
Condition
Light soiling and staining; general and New Testament titles soiled; fist ten leaves with browning, but generally quite clean thereafter; light soiling to edges; Cc1 (Psalms) lower corner loss to six lines of sidenotes only; Oo8 (Hosea 10) upper corner loss of two verses; NT title with small repair to lower margin; Aaa frayed to edges; Aaa5 (Matthew 7) loss to lower outer column impacting 13 lines of text; Fff some staining; four leaves with marginal loss.

Contemporary seventeenth and eighteenth century annotations on blank versos including “John Chapman his booke 1696” and “William Collings was born the 12th day of August 1731 about 12 a clock.”
