Book of Common Prayer with printed title page (1840) in red and black. Text in single column Roman font, each page within red ruled border. Inscription on front flyleaf reads “John Henry Stirling, from his Godfather W. Stirling. October 7, 1846.” Bible with printed title page (1845). Text in two column Roman font, each page withing ruled border. Bound with The Psalms of David in Metre. Inscription on front flyleaf reads “John Henry Stirling, from his affectionate Godmother. 7 Dec 1846.”
Binding
Dark blue morocco with boards double-paneled in blind. Spines with four raised blind-lined bands and the words “Holy Bible” and “Common Prayer” lettered in gilt. Fully functioning closing clasps and gauffered edges. Fore-edge paintings to all edges with text reading “Search The Scriptures” (Bible) and “Pray Always”, “Watch And Pray” (Common Prayer). Plain endpapers.
Condition
Lightly scuffed with bumped corners. Light foxing to first and last few leaves. Joints rubbed with front board of Prayer Book just starting to split. A nice matching set with very attractive fore-edge paintings.
