Description
Engraved general title page (1679) featuring Moses, Aaron, Jeremiah, and Isaiah, along with the view of the Theatre. Text in two column Roman font with notes and dates in the margins. Bound with 85 full-page steel engravings. Printed New Testament title page (1679) with device of three crowns and an open book. Bound with The Whole Booke of Psalms by Sternhold and Hopkins with printed title page (1679).
Collation
a^2, A-D^8, E^4, F-Z^8, Aa-Zz^8, Aaa-Bbb^8, Ccc^2, a-k^8, A-P^8. Complete with all titles.
Binding
Rebacked in parchment with contemporary gilt-tooled parchment spine laid down. Double gilt-paneled boards with corner fleurons and small flowers and snails around a central compartment. All edges gilt. Marbled endpapers.
Condition
Quite crisp and clean overall; general title frayed to edges with two small stains; D6 (Ex 9) loss to lower third of text; two plates with marginal loss; New Testament title with closed tear.
Provenance
Note on rear blank leaf reads “Mrs. Pennyston Cornwell” and adjacent leaf reads “Friday in the evening about seven o’clock Forbos Fisher son ow Will[iam] & Mary Fisher was born on the 3rd of January 1717.”
Note
The second quarto King James Bible printed at Oxford and the first with dates in the margin. A very clean and attractive example with all edges gilt and bound in attractive vellum.
