A complete octavo King James Bible in in attractive polished calf. Text is interleaved throughout with nineteenth century ownership inscriptions.

Description

The general title page (1642) with wood engraving featuring the four evangelists surrounded by the tents of the twelve tribes as well as the figures of the twelve apostles. Title is enclosed within a heart-shaped frame. Fifteen blank leaves at front for book summaries and headings. Small woodcut vignettes at the beginning of Genesis, Psalms, and Matthew. Text in two column Roman font. Issued without Apocrypha. New Testament title page (1642) similar to the general title. Concludes with colophon (1642). Bound with a complete The Whole Book of Psalmes within woodcut border (1642).

A-Q^8 (Vol. 1, Gen – II Kings 10); R-Z^8, Aa-Kk^8 (Vol. 2, II Kings 10 – Ez 40); Ll-Zz^8, Aaa-Kkk^8 (Vol. 3, Ez 40 - Rev). Complete.

Binding

Contemporary polished and double paneled calf. Covers with rolled border and corner fleurons. Spine with four raised bands. Expertly rebacked with contemporary spine laid down. Plain endpapers. All edges gilt.

Condition

Crisp and clean overall. General title nearly detached. Blank leaves with occasional commentary notes in neat hand. Sidenotes shaved with infrequent loss of a letter. Lightly rubbed, corners bumped, joints lightly worn but holding firm. A lovely example of a hard-to-find interleaved Bible.
