A nicely red-ruled King James Bible in a solid binding. Text in two-column Roman font and bound with the illustrated Genealogies and sought-after double page map.

Description

General title page (1628) engraved within border comprising twenty-four compartments showing the tents of the twelve tribes as well as the figures of the twelve apostles. Title is enclosed within a heart-shaped frame. Illustrated genealogies by [John Speed] which concludes with double-page map of the Promised Land. Text in two column Roman font and ruled in red throughout. First chapter ornaments and floriated woodcut initials. Small vignette of Adam and Eve before Genesis, David with harp before Psalms, and the Four Evangelists before Matthew. With Apocrypha as issued. New Testament title (1628) follows general title design.

A-Z^8, Aa-ZZ^8 (-Mm1), Aaa-Rrr^8. Lacks Mm1 (Dan 11:25- Hos 3:1).

Binding

Nineteenth century brown diced calf. Spine with recessed gilt-lined bands and the words “Holy Bible” and “1628” lettered in gilt. All edges red. Plain endpapers. Dentelles.

Provenance

Armorial bookplate of “Admiral Duff” [Archibald Duff] to front pastedown.

Condition

Very lightly rubbed to head and tail of spine; text is overall quite crisp and clean; one closed tear in Genealogies; Map trimmed with loss of one line at foot; D5 short closed tear without loss; Cc8 small hole to fore-edge margin without loss; Dd4 (Song of Solomon) loss of 12 lines to upper outer column; Dd5 loss of 6 lines to upper inner column. A very nice copy of an early King James Bible with map.
