A textually complete quarto King James Bible in contemporary blind paneled calf binding. Text is printed in black letter and is bound with the illustrated Genealogies and the sought-after double page map.

Description

The Genealogies with printed title page by J[ohn] S[peed], complete with double page map bound at the end of the volume. General title page (1614) lacking. Text in two column black letter. Both titles omit the word “Appointed”. Apocrypha included as issued. New Testament title page (1621) engraved within woodcut border comprising twenty-four compartments showing the tents of the twelve tribes as well as the figures of the twelve apostles. Title is enclosed within a heart-shaped frame. Concludes with colophon (1621) and tailpiece. Bound with Two Right Profitable and Fruitful Concordances by R[obert] F. H[errey] with printed title page (1622). Bound with The Whole Booke of Psalmes with printed title page (1623) and printer’s device, lacks all after Psalm 148. Various woodcut first chapter initials and head- and tailpieces.

A^8, A-Z^8, Aa-Zz^8, Aaa-Sss^8. Lacks general title page.

Binding

Contemporary blind paneled calf with corner fleurons. Rebacked in matching calf with five raised bands and gold lines to the spine. The words “The Holy Bible” lettered in gilt. Plain endpapers.

Provenance

Early eighteenth century birth records of Hunt family on front pastedown. Many other leaves (Kk1, Ss6, Xx5, Eee2, Fff8, Sss8) with ownership inscriptions and early pen trails.

Condition

Rubbed; A1 (first leaf of Genesis) a bit soiled; Kk-Mm light stain to gutter; occasional soiling and staining but no other notable flaws; some signs of use but generally a well-preserved copy.
