Description

The Book of Common Prayer with title in manuscript facsimile, lacking the preliminaries. The Genealogies with printed title page by J[ohn] S[peed], complete without map. The general title page (1614) engraved within woodcut border comprising twenty-four compartments showing the tents of the twelve tribes as well as the figures of the twelve apostles. Title is enclosed within a heart-shaped frame. Text in two column black letter. Both titles omit the words “appointed to be…” and the general title reads “the Bible” instead of “the Holy Bible.” Ruth 3:15 with “she went…” Apocrypha included as issued. New Testament title page (1615) with border like the general title. Concludes with colophon (1615) and tailpiece. Bound with Two Right Profitable and Fruitful Concordances with printed title page (1619) and colophon (1620). Bound with The Whole Booke of Psalmes with printed title page (1619), lacks the final leaf of the Prayers as common. Various woodcut first chapter initials and head- and tailpieces.

Binding

Recently rebacked in matching dark brown calf with older spine laid down. Wooden boards with double blind-paneled border and center stamp. Hinges reinforced with book tape. Marbled endpapers.   

Condition

Rubbed; trimmed at head, occasionally reducing border; lightly browned, infrequent soiling and staining; general title with small chip and repair to upper corner; A8 (final preliminary leaf) lower corner loss with missing portion in manuscript; A1 (Gen 1) repair to fore-edge with sidenotes replaced in manuscript; overall a clean copy.

“William Colling his book” to colophon and inscriptions to A8 verso; gift inscription dated 1919 to Archdeacon E.J. Nash; bookplate of Gilbert White, Bishop of Carpentaria in Australia.
