Summary

A complete 1614/1615 quarto King James Bible in an attractive brown calf binding. Text in black letter with illustrated Genealogies and Tables. The general title famously omits the word Holy. Copies of the KJB prior to 1620 are difficult to acquire.

Description

General title page (1614) laid down. Title engraved within woodcut border comprising twenty-four compartments showing the tents of the twelve tribes as well as the figures of the twelve apostles. Title is enclosed within a heart-shaped frame. To the Most High and Mightie Prince … (3 pp.). The Translators to the Reader (4 ff.). Genealogies with title page (n.d.) is complete. Text in two column black letter. Apocrypha included as issued. New Testament title page (1615) with verso blank, similar to general title above. Concludes with colophon (1615). Ends with two complete tables which includes the title page (1615) and colophon (1615). Various woodcut first chapter initials and head and tailpieces.

A^8, A-Z^8, Aa-Zz^8, Aaa-SSS^8. Complete.

Binding

Bound in brown paneled and blind tooled calf. Spine with four raised gilt ruled bands and gilt tooling to compartments. Features two red gilt ruled labels with the words “Holy Bible” and “1614/15” in gilt. New plain endpapers.  

Condition

General title page laid down with two repaired closed tears; Upper corner marginal loss to prelims, Genealogies, and signature A of Bible text; Genealogy leaves frayed to fore-edge and head with occasional border loss; A1, D4, E2 of Genealogies with light loss, the final leaf (E2) with open tear resulting in loss to the part that contains Christ; A1-2 (Gen 1-6) and A7-8 (Gen 19-24) frayed with stain to gutter and some closed tears; Ggg3-Ppp1 two small marginal wormholes; cropped, infrequently reducing headlines and more frequently impacting marginal notes (particularly to the Tables at the end). A complete copy with crisp and clean pages in the main of an early version of the King James Bible.
