Title to the third part printed with cut of Lord Burghley. The book of Psalms is presented in parallel columns with the Great Bible version (black letter) and the Bishops’ version (Roman). Collation
[unsigned]^8, *^8, A-Z^8, Aa-Kk^8, Ll^6, Aaa-ZZZ^8, &&&^6, Aaaa-Mmmm^8, Nnnn^10, A-R^8, S^4. Lacks *8 (blank leaf).
Binding
Bound in old brown calf. Metal clasps. Plain endpapers.
Condition
Calf is rough but holding well. Title page in facsimile to front of volume; most of the Calendar leaves repaired to edges with loss; remnant of general title page laid down before Genesis (it’s seen better days); O1, U5-7, E3-6, F2-8 with lower marginal loss; G1-3 lower corner repaired with text loss; H2, L5, R-S fore-edge and lower edge reinforced reducing sidenotes. The above faults notwithstanding, a scarce and complete copy of the second folio Bishops’ Bible.
Provenance
Two bookplates on front pastedown (one from R. Mitford). Inserted catalogue description from Sotheby’s (sale on May 19, 1930).
Note
The second folio edition of the Bishops’ Bible, with the text seeing more revision since the first quarto of 1569, with the New Testament updated by Giles Lawrence. The dual Psalter is unique to this edition. Whereas the woodcuts in the first edition were placed at the relevant text, here they occur only at the beginning of books, and function as visual summaries.
