An early octavo King James Bible, printed just two years after the first edition of 1611. This She Bible is housed in a contemporary binding and bound with the Genealogies and Psalter.

Description

The Genealogies by John Speed lacks the printed title page. Composite title page (1613) engraved within woodcut border comprising twenty-four compartments showing the tents of the twelve tribes as well as the figures of the twelve apostles. Title is enclosed within a heart-shaped frame. The first page of Genesis with a small cut of Adam and Eve in the Garden and the first page of Psalms with a small cut of David playing the harp. Text in two column Roman font with the whole ruled in red. The text in Ruth 3:15 reads “and she went...” New Testament title page (1613) like the general title. Ends on colophon (1613). Bound with The Whole Book of Psalmes by Sternhold and Hopkins with title page (1613) featuring a woodcut architectural border. First chapter decorative initials and head- and tailpieces throughout.

A-Z^8, Aa-Nn^8, Yy^4, Zz^8, Aaa-Kkk^8. Lacks Ff4 (Romans 8-10) and the Apocrypha, as common.

Binding

Brown full contemporary paneled calf. Boards with gilt stamped central lozenge bearing the initials E.S. Gilt paneled spine with recessed bands. Hand illuminated Latin vellum leaf as binder’s waste behind spine. Lacks clasps. All edges gilt.

Condition

Text generally clean with infrequent soiling and staining; Ii5, Kkk1 closed tear to inner column without loss; lacks Ff4; Kkk8 frayed to edges, missing a couple of letter of sidenotes; a few signatures slightly pulled; final leaf of Psalter stained to recto; rubbed and scuffed, particularly to edges; slightly splayed. 

Scarcity

USTC shows 17 copies in holding, with only two copies in North America.
