The first quarto King James Bible in black letter type. Complete Bible text rebound in modern calf with the Genealogies, Tables, and Psalter. A nice He Bible which closely follows the 1611 first edition folio.

Description

General title page (1613) engraved within woodcut border comprising twenty-four compartments showing the tents of the twelve tribes as well as the figures of the twelve apostles. Title is enclosed within a heart-shaped frame. Both titles omit the words “Appointed to …” The Genealogies by J[ohn] S[peed] with title page (n.d.) is complete without map. Text in two column black letter, closely following the errors in the first edition. Ruth 3:15 with the reading “And he went into the citie.” Apocrypha included as issued. New Testament title page (1613) with verso blank. Concludes with colophon (1613) and “Benjamin Pollard his Book March the 10th, 1771” on verso. Bound with Two right profitable and fruitful Concordances with title page (1613) by R.F.H. Also bound with The Whole Booke of Psalmes with title page (1615). Numerous woodcut first chapter initials and head- and tailpieces throughout.

Binding

Recently rebound in blind-paneled brown calf. Spine with four raised blind-ruled bands. Second compartment with “Holy Bible” lettered in gilt. Faded marbled edges. Plain endpapers.

General title lightly frayed and stained to edges; Genealogies with dampstain to upper right third of text; C2 (Gen 44) light stain to text; E-H small stain to lower outer column; H4 (Num 22) repaired half-moon tear at fore-edge with loss of 24 lines to outer column; M2 (Josh 19) loss of a few letters; T-Aa dampstain to outer margin; Dd2 small corner tear with loss of catchword only; Qq1 small marginal loss; Mmm-Qqq frayed to bottom corner; Qqq8 repaired with loss of 10 lines to outer column; Rrr-Sss frayed to edges with repair at Rrr6; top third of printed title to Whole Booke of Psalmes torn away and lacking final leaf of Prayers.
