A 1600 black letter Geneva Bible, complete with Tables and Psalter. Nicely rebacked in brown calf, and apparently the first Bible printed by Robert Barker.

Description

General title page (1600) within architectural border. The text is presented in two column black letter. Apocrypha included as issued. New Testament with similar title page (1600), ending on colophon (n.d.) at the end of Revelation. Bound with the Two Concordances and Psalter. Woodcut first chapter initials and decorated head and tailpieces throughout.

A-Z^8, Aa-Xx^8, Yy^6 (Old Testament); *^4, Kkk-Yyy^8, Zzz^10 (New Testament). Complete.

Binding

Old paneled calf, newly rebaked and recornered. Covers with double blind-rolled and lined border featuring florets at corners. Spine with five raised blind-ruled bands and a red gilt-lined morocco label with the words “The Bible” in gilt. The letters “1600” in gilt to foot of spine. Plain endpapers.  

Condition

General title page with top 70 percent torn away leaving only bottom inner corner with publication date; K4 bottom outer corner torn away affecting side notes; Kk5 half moon tear removing some words of sidenotes verso; Nn4-Qq4 light dampstaining; Zz7 (2 Esdras 40-5) bottom third of page torn away; Yy4-Ddd2 light dampstaining; lacks D1 from Concordances; lacks title page of Psalter and all after Psalm 115; last leaf of Psalter quite soiled; bound with a badly incomplete BCP beginning at A2 (Morning Prayers) and ending with a partial leaf of Godly Prayers glued onto the paste down.
