- First Quarto Black Letter - 'She' Bible in a close to VERY GOOD condition.
preserved over almost 4 centuries - King James Bibles printed
with the 'she' text in Ruth 3:15 ("... and she
went into the city" ). This is also one of the first black letter quarto edition of
the KJV ever printed. Title: "The Holy Bible, containing the
Old Teftament, and the New: Newly Tranflated out of the Originall
Tongues: And with the former tranflations diligently compared and revifed, By his Majefties fpeciall commandement, Imprinted at London
By Robert Barker, Printer to the Kings moft Excellent Maieftie. ANNO
1613." Both this general title page as the New Testament
title page (dated 1614) are within historiated woodcut
borders; woodcuts depict 12 tribes of Israel and 12 disciples. Black
Letter (Gothic font) double column text.
It starts with the (32 page,
lacking last leaf)
genealogies (with title page), including the VERY RARE double page
map of Canaan, the Apocrypha. Ends with colophon 1614. Various
decorated first chapter capitals, colophons and other engravings.
BOUND in VERY
RECENT FULL SPECKLED TAN CALF LEATHER BINDING WITH ORNATELY GILT
PATTERNED BOARD BORDERS AND WITH STUNNING LAVISHLY GILDED SPINE in
FINISHED WITH RED GILDED TITLE LABEL.
This QUARTO sized King James Bible is in
an overall close to VERY GOOD condition. Complete Bible text
with title pages. The Genealogies section has edge and corner
clipped pages (see pictures). Bible shows wear throughout.
Leaves are good though
with general age toning and occasional variable staining. Headers
virtual all intact as seen.Gen.1 leaf is off-set a little with small
gap at top inner corner. Early leaves in main title page a bit
thumbed. 2" closed tear to (Judges ch.1.) THREE SECTIONS of HALF a
DOZEN LEAVES have MARGINAL EDGE CHIPPING. These are Amos / Habakkuk,
Matthew and Colossians / 2 Timothy (also top corners lost.). A
handful of other minor closed tears.
