The work was originally announced in 1843, and was issued in 54
numbers of 25ct each. J.A. Adams, the engraver, is credited with
having taken the first electrotype in America from a woodcut. Many
illustrations in this Bible are done this way. Artists were engaged
for more than six years (!) in the preparation of the designs and
engravings included in this Bible, at a cost of over $20,000 (a
small fortune in those days!).

GOOD to EXCELLENT condition. First book edition of Harper's Illuminated Bible
(first issued in 54 parts). Large, thick and beautiful, bound in
lavish bordered leather on the covers and spine (all original). Contents leaf printed in color,
engraved main title, engraved title to Apocrypha/ New Testament
printed in color as well, 2 frontispieces, text in triple column,
the middle column a narrow one with notations and glosses; numerous
wood-engraved illustrated throughout. Gilt page edges and closing
clasp. Book is in
great shape, well
maintained with gilt bright and shining. Binding is professionally
restored and the book opens and can be used daily without any
reservations. Pages with very light browning,
all bound; clean and unmarked with scattered instances of foxing,
