Cassell's  famous printing of an extensive series of 220 full page illustrations by the famous Gustave Dore. Including the Old Testament (with a total of 120 engravings), the Apocrypha (21 engravings) and the New Testament (with 79 engravings).
In the 1870s, The DorĂ© Bible was likely the most treasured (and expensive) book in the world. The English edition from Cassell, Petter and Galpin, caused a demand among collectors for any and everything by DorĂ©. Because of the demand, a number of editions in English were between 1867 and 1903 in a variety of formats, none of which were dated on the title page. This Bible is among one of the earlier editions, containing 220 engravings (later editions had only 205). With separate title pages for Apocrypha and New Testament. Four pages preceding the New Testament with wood-engraved borders providing space for Family Register, Births, Marriages, and Deaths- all never used. Bound in full tooled dark leather and "Holy Bible" in gold letters on the spine. All edges are gilt. All Dore plates present as called for in contents. Complete in every respect.
Also includes the original - never written on - family 'death, birth and marriage' pages. This Bible is overall well preserved and in a VERY GOOD (VG) to EXCELLENT (E) condition. The binding are  professionally restored and the book can be used and read - with care (as always) on a daily basis.  There is some typical occasional foxing throughout. See the many pictures!
A beautifully preserved edition of the famous Dore Bible!
