120 engravings), the Apocrypha (21 engravings) and the New Testament (with
In the 1870s, The Doré Bible was
likely the most treasured (and expensive) book in the world. The
English edition from Cassell, Petter and Galpin, caused a
demand among collectors for any and everything by Doré. Because of
the demand, a number of editions in English were between 1867 and
1903 in a variety of formats, none of which were dated on the title
page. This Bible is among one of the earlier editions, containing 220
engravings (later editions had only 205). With separate title pages for Apocrypha and New
Testament. Four pages preceding the New Testament with wood-engraved
borders providing space for Family Register, Births, Marriages, and
Deaths- all never used. Bound in full tooled dark leather
and "Holy Bible" in gold
letters on the spine. All edges are
gilt. All Dore plates present as called for in contents. Complete in

never written on - family 'death, birth and marriage' pages. This Bible is overall well
preserved and in a VERY GOOD (VG) to EXCELLENT (E) condition.
The binding are professionally restored
and the book can be used and read - with care (as always) on a daily basis.
