'Expository notes, with practical observations, on the New Testament of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Wherein the sacred text is at large recited, the sense explained, and the instructive example of the Blessed Jesus, and his Holy Apostles, to our imitation recommended. The whole designed to encourage the reading of the scriptures in private families, and to render the daily perusal of them profitable and delightful to which is added the life of the author, written expressly from authentic communications'

Burkitt, William. London: Thomas Kelly, 1828.

Massive New Testament folio, illustrated profusely with a frontispiece portrait of William Burkitt, with his annotations, as well as dozens of full page steel-engraved plates throughout. William Burkitt (1650-1703) was a vicar and lecturer in Dedham, England. His expository notes on the New Testament (still in print and even available on CD-rom today) were written "with practical observations on the New Testament of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, wherein The Sacred Text is at Large recited, the Sense Explained, and the Instructive Example of the Blessed Jesus, and his Holy Apostles, to our Imitation Recommended." He designed his New Testament to "to encourage the Reading of the Scriptures in Private Families, and to Render the Daily Perusal of them profitable and Delightful." During the colonial period and well into the 19th century, daily family devotions were a regular part of Christians' day. Original marked leather boards and spine with original label intact to the spine, the front boards with gilt borders and the spine with gilt rule and decor as well. The hinges intact & joints have been nicely reinforced and are now firm. Leather with minor wear, as shown. Interior pleasantly toned, bound firm, unmarked and complete, with marbled EPs.
Historically valuable and a rare early folio Bible.
