A scarce edition of the most influential and beloved version of the
English King James Bible! First published in 1611 and indisputably
the most influential of English Bible translations, the impact of
the King James Version on piety, language and literature is
incalculable. Combined with a complete Booke of Common Prayer, a
complete engraved Genealogies (including the rare map), Both
Testaments and the Apocrypha, as well as a complete Whole Book of
Psalms, this is a true late 17th century compendium of English
Religious Works that are important, inspiring and intrinsically and
spiritually valuable, housed in an unforgettable ornate binding.
A rare and truly beautiful bible; this early seventeenth century
King James Holy Bible is bound together with three additional works,
all complete including title pages, many with ornate decor and
woodcuts. Stout 8vo, bound in striking period gilt and red morocco
gilt, ornately tooled with a variety of corner and central botanical
devices and sprays, with a background of hatched gilt diamonds; the
spine also ornately embellished with five raised bands and floral
decor. Page edges gilt, with some colored gauffering to the edges,
slightly faded. There is a large armorial presentation bookplate
from Charles W G Howard (1814-1879), a well known British member of
Parliament, dated 1877, presented from Right Honorable Sir David
Dundas (1799 - 1877), Knight of Ochtertyre and a well known Scottish
lawyer and politician (more below on both). Dundas has also signed
the rear pastedown a few times .
VERY GOOD condition. Gorgeous engraved title pages for the
Common Prayer as well as both Testaments of the Bible, as shown.
Bound with pastedown. The text is printed in two columns in Latin
font, with frequent notes and marginal commentary. Boards very well
kept with ornate detailing still nice and bright, as shown; some
minor edgewear and handling/rubbing. Spine with similar wear, very
well kept. Front hinge/joint expertly rebacked many decades ago,
forming a sturdy and strong, readable copy. The top and the bottom
of the hinge in front with a slight split, as shown, but again, this
has been restored and strengthened and is by no means at all
displeasing or distracting from the beauty of the binding. The
majority of the leaves quite bright and clean, a few with some
minimal spot wear and similar age flaws. All firmly bound and every
work 100% complete. Genealogies includes many engraved leaves and
the rarely found 2 page map of Canaan. Whole Booke of Psalmes
contains woodcut bordered title and printed music. Bible has
illustrated headers to Genesis and Matthew, as well as KJV crest in
front. BCP has ornate title page, the only leaf in the Bible with
notable wear, as shown with a few chips and some ugly tape repairs.
Rest of block is fantastic, no shaping or cropping.
A truly important Bible in a gorgeous fine ornate
