beautifully re-bound/restored Geneva (Breeches) Holy Bible in a VERY GOOD and
DAILY USABLE condition, containing the Old and New Testaments and
the Apocrypha, Two very extensive concordances (tables) and a 1585
Metric Psalter with musical bars. Printed in London by the renowned
The Geneva Bible is often
referred to as the 'Breeches' Bible because of its translation in
Genesis 3:7 as "and they sowed figge-tree leaves together, and made themselves breeches" (the
KJV has "aprons").
Very attractive restored with
ORIGINAL brown calf leather covers decorated with the original
hardware (8 crner pieces, 2 center pieces and closing clasps) and
The Bible is printed in 2 columns black letter (Gothic) text
with the extensive Geneva Bible notes in Roman font on the sides and
as footnotes. Decorated with chapter initials and many colophons.
The Bible text itself is
COMPLETE and preliminary pages, like 'How to take profit of the Scriptures',
'Of the incomparable treasure', 'the Sum of the Whole Scriptures'
and 'Certain Questions and Answers about the doctrine of
Predestination' and 'The names and order of all the bookes'
Solid binding! Lacks general
title page, Included New Testament title (laid down with repairs),
titles to Concordances and Psalter, all colophons etc. The Psalter
is dated 1585 (rare) and contains all Psalms and Hymns (lacks 1
leaf). Nicely rebacked with original leather and metal pieces.
Closing straps are in fully working order (original metal, new
leather). various pages of early Provenance. Some leaves lack
corners but are professionally repaired. Typical use related wear.
