How to browse through our Bibles:
All Bibles are listed in order of publishing date. For each Bible there is a seperate detailed webpage with many, many more pictures that you can reach by clicking on the title of the Bible or at the 'more details' link at the end of the description.
A note on the quality of our Antique Bibles:
We take great pride in the quality of the Bibles we offer. We cannot replace missing pages or undo water damage and so on, but we do make sure that the binding of the pages as well as the covers is in good (daily) useable condition. Therefore most Bibles go through a restoration process where the spines are cleaned of old failing adhesive and loose pages or broken signatures are restored/replaced. Old spine leather is reinforced or replaced and spine reinforcement is applied with new headbands and the cover hinge is extra re-enforced. Also the cover leather is cleaned and treated and if applicable the clasps are cleaned and restored. This is not just a patch job! This process brings the strength of the book back to its original quality!

This is the VERY FIRST Geneva Bible ever printed! And this is the first Bible ever printed with verse numbers. Exceptional preservation and completeness! The TRUE Bible of the reformation translated and printed in English by the Reformers at Geneva (under the leadership of John Calvin himself).
THE BIBLE AND HOLY SCRIPTURES CONTEYNED IN THE OLDE AND NEWE TESTAMENT, TRANSLATED ACCORDING TO THE EBRUE AND GREKE, AND CONFERRED WITH THE BEST TRANSLATIONS IN DIVERS LANGUGES ... GENEVA: PRINTED BY ROULAND HALL, 1560
First edition of the "Geneva Bible," the first complete Bible in English printed in roman type with verse divisions.  Although never formally adopted in England, the Geneva Bible remained the most popular of all versions for three generations, with one hundred and forty editions printed between 1560 and 1644. Beautiful museum quality rebound with exquisite binding in contemporary 16th century style with calf leathers covers/spine, including hand cut brass clasps/straps - this is how a luxury edition of this Bible would have been issued! Comes with a custom full leather enclosure in matching style. COMPLETE Bible text with the title pages to the Old Testament (very high quality facsimile) and the New Testament (original, exceptionally preserved)
This Bible text is complete in EVERY ASPECT, it also includes the epistle to 'Qviene Elisabet', the Apocrypha, the two tables at the end, the suppuration and 'the order of the yeres'. It is basically all complete except for the original title and the address. Quite amazing!
Printed in Roman Type with double columns, divided in verses, marginal notes in very small Roman type. References etc. and contents before chapters in italics. Subject headings in headlines. An argument is prefixed to each book. The Hebrew names are carefully spelt and accented. Red ruled by hand throughout. The engravings in the text number 26, many of these are accompanied with descriptive notes. Most of these engraves in the first edition are significantly larger than found in the later editions.
Thomas Frognall Dibdin writes regarding the 1560 Geneva, "It...is now become rare and no early English Bible is likely to be found in a more soiled and injured state, and is seldom perfect." - The Library Companion; Dibdin, Rev. T. F., 1825. His notes precede the bibliographical work of Francis Fry by some forty years.

VERY GOOD+ and WELL PRESERVED condition

A very RARE and remarkable well preserved ILLUSTRATED FOLIO 1562 edition of the Great Bible containing the complete Old Testament, Apocrypha and New Testament! No pages lacking, which is extremely rare to find as usually sections in the front and back are missing.
This Bible is described in Herbert's catalogue as #117 - printed by Richard Harrison. This offering lacks almost all the preliminary leaves as well as the general title. All other titles (four in total are present). It start with a perfectly preserved full page engraving of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden with the list of books on verso.
The Bible text is divided into five sections: 1) Pentateuch (5 Books of Moses); 2) Joshua-Job (with title present); 3) Psalter to Malachi (with title present); 4) Apocrypha (with title present) and 5) the New Testament (with Table and large engraved title Anno Do. M.DLXII [1562]). The Bible ends with the dated colophon. The Bible is printed in Gothic - Black letter font, with 2 columns of 58 lines. Just about all books begin with a woodcut illustration. Some books also have illustrations at other chapters and the book of Revelation has a special series of 20 special cuts as chapter illustrations. Also just about all chapters have engraved woodcut first chapter initials. The pages have large bold printed headers and the leaves are numbered in roman numbers on the right top. Except for the Psalter where the leaves are number by a count of Days.
The Great Bible was the first authorized edition of the Bible in English, authorized by King Henry VIII of England to be read aloud in the church services of the Church of England. The Great Bible was so called due to Sir Thomas Cromwell, Secretary to Henry VIII and Vicar General requiring the clergy to "set up the Holy Bible of the largest volume in every church so that parishioners may read it".  Hence it has often been referred to as Cromwell's Bible. This was the first and only truly "Authorised Version" and was commonly chained to the pulpit in the churches. It remained the official bible for the Church of England for the the period from 1538 till the publication of the Bishop's Bible in 1568.
This 1562 edition was the FIRST AUTHORIZED printing after the accession of Elizabeth I and was issued to refocus the Church of England to the Great Bible as the preferred Scripture.
