A huge, elephant size (15" x10") King James Bible nicely bound in contemporary (could be original) brown leather - decorated/blind-stamped - English binding with "Common Prayer / Holy Bible" in gold letters on the spine. Has the complete - RARE - series of six double page maps (in English, but based on the famous series of maps found in the Dutch 1700s Bibles). The Bible is complete. All title pages present, even a set of THREE general titles to the Old Testament! Decorated chapter initials. Printed by John Baskett in London.
One of the general title specifies the "Sacred Geography contained in six maps". They depict (I) The situation of Paradise, (II) the sacred geography of the known part of the world;, (III), the plan of the city of Jerusalem, (IV) the Holy Land during Christ; (V) the land of Canaan travelled by Christ and (VI) the travels of St Paul and the other apostles. These maps are absolutely astounding in beauty and detail given a remarkable inside in the Biblical view and knowledge of the early 1700s!
Complete Bible text with all titles (including engraved general title) and prelims etc. Also bound with an incomplete Book of Common Prayer (starts with the collects), the complete Apocrypha, a complete Biblical Index and a partial (lacks after "P") Concordance.
Multiple titles to the Old Testament (3 titles), New Testament and the Concordance.
This folio Bible is in a VERY GOOD and well preserved condition. Leather boards with some scuffing. The binding in good and tight shape, that makes for a solid and very useable book that can be used and even read on a daily basis. Some previous owner's genealogical notes. Some foxing, smudges, tears, smaller damages etc throughout. The maps are in decent shape but have some tears and other damages (see the many pictures).
A very attractive early 1700s King James elephant  folio Bible!
